Geförderte Titel arabische Welt

Translation grants for books by Arab authors

Since creative writing from the Southern hemisphere continues to be sidelined on the literary markets in Europe, the Society for the Promotion of African, Asian and Latin American literature (a non-profit and non-commercial literary agency closely connected to the Frankfurt Book Fair) has developed a programme of translation grants for important fiction books by authors of the Southern hemisphere.

The programme is being funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the German government and the Swiss cultural foundation SüdKulturFonds. Since 1984 the German translations of 721 books (novels, short stories and poetry) have been supported, 174 of them by authors from the Arab region. The programme is working on the basis of applications by German and Swiss publishers (and not authors or translators). Hence, there are also books available in translation which have not received a translation grant. However, the majority of Arab literature and renowned authors in German translation have in recent years been supported by this programme.

Subsidies are granted by an independent jury.
